Remembrance Sunday Concert – Biber Requiem
Jersey
Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber’s Requiem in F minor (composed around 1692) stands as one of the most deeply expressive and innovative choral masterpieces of the High Baroque. Written during his tenure as Kapellmeister at Salzburg Cathedral, the work strikes a masterful balance between the solemnity of a Requiem, and the theatrical splendour of the Austrian Baroque. Set in the unusually sombre key of F minor – a key associated during the era with deep sorrow and repentance – the work utilizes dynamic polyphonic vocal writing contrasted against rich instrumental textures. Rather than emphasizing terrifying apocalyptic terror, Biber leans into tenderness, hope, and consolation, weaving intricate contrapuntal lines with lyrical solo passages.
