Enemies of Liberty: Two Rivals Who Died for Democracy

Jersey

Fri 25 Sep 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm £10.00

Join Tall Tales for a special two-hour Democracy Week walking tour through the heart of St Helier, exploring the extraordinary lives of two political giants who helped shape the freedoms we value today.

They fought for profoundly different visions of society. They challenged one another, opposed one another – and, by many accounts, thoroughly disliked one another. Yet both paid the ultimate price for their political convictions.

With exclusive access to historic spaces normally closed to the public, this immersive tour will take you behind the familiar streets and buildings of St Helier to uncover the people, arguments and conflicts that shaped Jersey’s democratic story.

Along the way, we will explore:

  • the political battles that divided the island;
  • the institutions where power was debated and exercised;
  • the personal rivalry between two formidable figures;
  • the sacrifices they made for liberty and representation; and
  • what their struggles can still teach us about democracy today.

This is not simply a history tour. It is a story of ambition, principle, conflict and courage—and a reminder that democratic freedoms have never been granted without a fight.
