Winner of the 2022 working drawing award, Gemma Thompson performs her drawing Graphic Score for Quartet in a celebratory event.
Winner of the 2022 working drawing award, Gemma Thompson will be joined by the musician Sam Sherry to perform her drawing Graphic Score for Quartet as part of our closing event with refreshments.
Gemma Thompson’s drawing Untitled (graphic score for quartet) is a graphic score created from a series of sound walk drawings. It is a codification of other sensory worlds, and could also be described as a form of landscape. On 24th March 2023 Thompson will be joined by the musicians Sam Sherry and Adam Sherry (A Dead Forest Index) and Monika Khot (Nordra) for a performance that will transform and transpose the drawn marks of the graphic score into sound. The four musicians will each respond to the piece having agreed on a set of rules to determine the length and key of the composition, as well as the different approaches to the marks, while allowing for improvisation.
Thompson is interested in exploring how the graphic score can become a useful tool for musicians, with the potential to offer a sense of freedom to transpose visual symbols or marks that correlate with their personal sonic vocabulary or language. She is interested in how other musicians would approach her mark-making and transform it into sound, and how her own listening and drawing practice could be ‘read’ or transformed through another’s practice.
Gemma Thompson is a visual artist with over 15 years experience as a professional musician. She has toured worldwide extensively and has received two Mercury Award nominations as the guitarist and founder of the band Savages.
Informal performance with limited seating available.
